The  pub and upmarket bed and breakfast called Fiddler's Green is situated in the central square of the historic and attractive small town of Portaferry within a stone's throw of the ancient castle.  Portaferry lies at the end of the Ards Peninsula, and from here a ferry plies across "The Narrows," the site of a spectacular tidal torrent four times a day as the water sweeps in and out between the Irish Sea and Strangford Lough.  On the opposite shore is Strangford, an old scenic fishing village.  Designated an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" and near several SSSI's (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) and historical relics there is much to see and do nearby.

The Fiddler's Green is famed for its characterful bar, hugely popular with locals and visitors alike because of the wonderful live Irish music played and the welcoming and convivial atmosphere (the Guinness is second to none also)!  Wholesome and satisfying bar food is served daily.

In addition to the bar, the Fiddler's Green is home to the maritime-themed Quarterdeck Restaurant whose menu has an emphasis on traditional Irish dishes, using the best local ingredients from farm and sea.  Jim McCarthy is the head chef and holds many awards for his cooking.  He also owns "Beatrice Kennedy" a well known and highly regarded restaurant in University Street in Belfast.

There are also rooms recently upgraded, including one with a four poster bed, which are available for bed and breakfast guests.  The Fiddler's Green is N. Irish Tourist Board approved.

The Fiddler's Green is owned and run by the McCarthy family.  Frank and Maureen McCarthy head up the family and two of their sons, Paul and Jim are excellent musicians, playing the banjo, mandolin, fiddle and accordion, hence great folk sessions can be heard any night.  Other musicians can join in and do their bit - the walls are covered in instruments and anyone who wants to can take one down and join the in the craíc.  Another son, Conor, is the manager, and sisters Graínne and Anne-Frances also help in the Fiddler's Green along with Paul's and Conor's wives, which makes it a great Irish family enterprise!

The name Fiddler's Green comes from an old sea shanty of that name.  It is said that fishermen believe that when they die they go to their "valhalla," Fiddler's Green, "where the girls are pretty and the beer there is free, and I'll see you some day in Fiddler's Green!"
