Portaferry pub launches Quarterdeck Restaurant
One of Portaferry's favourite hostels is celebrating the launch of its Quarterdeck Restaurant: situated at the rear of the Fiddlers Green the new eaterie is open from Thursday to Sunday and Monday lunch, serving freshly prepared produce of the highest quality aimed at diners who really enjoy their food.
Head chef and family member Jim McCarthy prides his kitchen in the use of only the finest ingredients sourced from hand picked suppliers. Local seafood is available to order each evening the restaurant is open and its a seafood option which is the Special depending of course on markets, season, and availability.
Jim is also involved with the famous Beatrice Kennedy eaterie in Belfast's University Street which has recently been recognised with the award of a prestigious AA rosette - one of the most coveted prizes in the local food industry. Who knows? Perhaps the Quarterdeck will be next!
Being open over the entire weekend, the new restaurant is an ideal location for visitors wishing to enjoy both excellence in fresh cuisine coupled with a real live folk pub atmosphere. All musicians are welcome to come and join in spontaneous music making (which often goes on late into the evening!) the instruments are hanging around Fiddlers Green's internal walls waiting for an able musician or two to make them come alive!
Frank McCarthy himself sings and plays guitar, with son Paul on the banjo and bodhran. Chef Jim joins the party too when things cool down in the kitchen, and is a dab hand on the mandolin for a lively jig and reel.
The pub now also facilitates its guests overnight in a quaint Bed and Breakfast style home, with four bedrooms to choose from - one of which had a fabulous four poster for special occasions.
Plans for the immediate future include the opening of a brand new upmarket restaurant right next door to Fiddlers Green in the property which was, until recently, the McCarthy family home, all being well before Christmas.
Frank McCarthy told us - We really do want our guests to call in and enjoy our pub to the full. We're very proud of the standard of cuisine on offer at this new facility, and its already going down a treat with the locals in the town. The folk sessions in the lounge/bar are a great night's entertainment which can now be finished off with an overnight stay in fine accommodation.
